This brooch is one of my favourite pieces of jewelry. The design is from an illustration of a griffin by Maurice Sendak especially for the Osborne Collection of Children’s Literature at the Lillian H. Smith branch of the Toronto Public Library. Sendak was inspired by the griffin who stands guard outside the library, and he has appeared in several of Sendak’s illustrations, including those for Frank Stockton’s The Griffin and the Minor Canon and The Bee Man of Orn.

Oh, it’s so cute! I just read The Griffin and the Minor Canon and was surprised at how sad it turned out to be. Poor Minor Canon.
